GUNNIBOY - Ajit Agarkar Fanatic | Works best with - Browser : InternetExplorer 5.5 + Text size : Medium (Adjust thro' View) Resolution : 800 X 600 |
He came up through the India A ranks and
suddenly burst upon the scene in the late 90s as one of the most talented young all rounders in Indian cricket. A nippy pacer, capable of moving
the ball both ways and a more than useful late order attacking
batsman, Ajit Agarkar was hailed as the best thing to
happen to Indian cricket for a long time. Great things were expected from this Shivaji
Park product in Mumbai and Agarkar indicated that he would live upto early promise by racing to 50 wickets in
one day internationals faster than anyone else - breaking the record held by none other
than Dennis Lillee. However, his subsequent record - both in Tests and ODI's - have been a disappionment , considering his immense talent. Plagued by injuries, Agarkar used to struggle with his fitness .He had a poor World Cup 99 tournament ( It happens with everybody , doesnt it ?) and on his return sought advice from Lillee at the MRF Pace Foundation. Even his 1st Australian tour was a disaster , mainly with the bat, though not as bad as the one the Indian team as such had to face. Agarkar's bowling in Australia , though satisfactory , could have been better & his batting was a total letdown - Thanks to some brilliant umpiring - So typical of Australia . After all it cannot be easy to come back from five successive ducks in Test cricket - four of them off the first ball faced ( Never mind that on 3 occasions he was GIVEN OUT & on 2 other occasions he got out playing POSITIVE SHOTS - Something that, even, none of our established batsmen did !!! ) . As for the 2 dismissals in the recent Mumbai test , In the first innings it was just a typical leg spinners wicket,a Caught & bowled and in the second innings it was a really reckless shot succumbing to immense pressure from behind the wickets urging him all the time to have a 'SLOG'. But he has more than compensated in the recent tour of Australia and silenced all his critics. He was instrumental in India winning the Adelaide test & retaining the Border-Gavaskar trophy! He began regaining his form with the bat too towards the end of the series. Actually his absence was instrumental in India losing to Australia in the world cup 2003 (both the league match as well as the finals) and also the VB series in Australia. But , let me take this opportunity to predict that he will soon emerge as India's best ever FAST Bowler & certainly one of the best allrounders in the world ( if given the right opportunuties ) . |
